Life in Lagos is often described as fast-paced and full of opportunities, but for many residents, daily survival comes with enormous challenges. Our correspondent visited the Shibiri–Iyana Era Road bridge in Lagos and observed that many people live and work around the bridge despite the difficult environment. The area is home to furniture makers, carpenters, churches, small businesses, and other residents who depend on the location for their livelihoods.Following a heavy rainfall, floodwater completely covered parts of the bridge, yet many people continued their businesses as usual. The situation highlights the harsh realities faced by those who have little choice but to work in flood-prone areas.Residents and business owners in the area are exposed to recurring flooding, poor sanitation, and other environmental hazards, raising concerns about their safety and well-being. The flooding also affects movement and can disrupt economic activities whenever heavy rain occurs. The situation at the Shibiri–Iyana Era Road bridge underscores the need for improved drainage systems, better urban planning, and safer commercial spaces. Many observers believe that government authorities should take proactive steps to address flooding and improve living and working conditions in vulnerable parts of Lagos. As Lagos continues to grow, ensuring that residents have access to safe environments and adequate infrastructure will remain an important priority.
