Long ago, when animals lived together in peace and spoke the same language as humans, there was a great king who ruled over a prosperous kingdom. The king had a beautiful daughter, the princess, whom many young men admired. Chiefs, hunters, and wealthy men came from distant lands hoping to marry her, but the king refused them all.One day, Tortoise, the cleverest animal in the forest, appeared before the king."Your Majesty," he said, bowing respectfully, "I wish to marry your daughter."The king laughed. He knew Tortoise was intelligent, but he also knew he loved tricks."If you truly desire my daughter's hand," the king replied, "bring me the mighty Elephant. Only then will I consider your request."The king believed the task was impossible. Elephant was the strongest creature in the forest, and no one could force him anywhere.Tortoise left the palace smiling."I may not be the strongest," he whispered, "but my mind is stronger than muscles."The next morning, Tortoise visited Elephant, who was resting beneath a giant baobab tree."My dear friend," said Tortoise cheerfully, "I have wonderful news!"Elephant raised his huge ears. "What news could make you so excited?""The king has chosen you to become the next ruler of the kingdom! He asked me to bring you to the palace immediately so he can place the royal crown upon your head."Elephant's eyes sparkled with delight."Me? The king? At last, my greatness has been recognized!""Indeed," replied Tortoise. "But we must hurry. The king dislikes being kept waiting."Filled with pride, Elephant followed Tortoise toward the palace. Along the way, Tortoise praised Elephant's strength, wisdom, and size until Elephant was convinced the throne truly belonged to him. When they reached the palace gates, the king was astonished."How did you manage to bring Elephant here?" he asked.Tortoise smiled politely."As you commanded, Your Majesty."Only then did Elephant realize something was wrong.Instead of a royal celebration, soldiers surrounded him."The king never intended to crown you," whispered Tortoise. "He only wished for you to come here."Elephant was furious."You deceived me!" he roared."I did," answered Tortoise calmly. "But remember, my friend, pride often blinds even the strongest."The king kept his promise. He allowed Tortoise to marry the princess because he had completed the impossible task. From that day onward, Elephant became more cautious about believing sweet words, while Tortoise became famous throughout the land for proving that wisdom can accomplish what strength alone cannot. And whenever elders gathered children around the evening fire, they ended the story by saying:"Strength may carry a heavy load, but wisdom carries the day."
