His Excellency Governor Alex Chioma Oti
, born in 1965 in Umuru Umuehim, Isialangwa South LGA of Abia State, has significantly impacted his community and the state as a whole. With a distinguished background as a Nigerian economist, banker, investor, and philanthropist—along with former directorship at Diamond Bank PLC—Oti's journey in politics began with his candidacy for the governorship of Abia State under the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).
Gubernatorial History
On December 31, 2015, the Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri ruled in favor of Alex Oti, declaring him the legitimate winner of the gubernatorial elections held on April 11 and April 25. However, this decision was later overturned by the Supreme Court of Nigeria on February 3, 2016, which reinstated Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as governor. Oti is also a member of the editorial board of ThisDay Newspaper
, where he writes a fortnightly column titled "Outside the Box."
The 2023 gubernatorial elections marked a pivotal moment for Oti, influenced by the popularity of Mr. Peter Obi, the then-presidential candidate of the Labour Party. This surge not only benefited Oti but also assisted various candidates vying for seats in the House of Representatives, Senate, and local government positions. Despite challenges, including attempts to undermine his victory orchestrated by the previous administration, Oti triumphed with the support of Professor Nnena Oti, the INEC returning officer, who upheld the integrity of the electoral process.
